The key concept of my design is to highlight the length of the site by challenging the idea of vision and reality. This concept is derived from Yayoi Kusama, a contemporary Japanese artist. Her works force you to question what you think you are visualising in contrast to the reality of the situation especially with her installations and video compositions.

This concept has been carried through a grid system and the use of the long corridor to create a conversation from the narrow lane across the street to the back. The roof of the corridor aims to light up at intervals inviting the visitor to step into the light and beyond. However upon entry, you are given three visual paths; straight through the corridor, across through the statue garden leading to the office, or to the gallery on your right. These views forecast the two main public purposes of the building; a gallery and a shop to sell artwork (however crossing through the garden relaxes the atmosphere and diminishes the urgency of a businessplace).

The front gallery doubles as a shop front. Through the glass windows viewers see straight through the public parts of the building while also watching the customers view art. This brings to question, who is the viewer and who is the viewee?

The private entrance at the back leads from carpark and side alleyway. This is used to access the workshop, storage and apartment for the owners. The public and private spaces are distinctly separated by the use of material.
